Slot Glossary

36 terms covering Dark Spiral's Summoning blocks, cascade chains, three bonus tiers (Shattered/Twisted/Tortured), and the path to 10,000x.

Autoplay

Spin the reels automatically for a set number of rounds. Pick how many spins and optional stop conditions (stop on bonus trigger, stop on balance threshold, stop on big cascade chain). Useful for grinding the 1-in-180 scatter trigger that opens Shattered/Twisted/Tortured Free Spins.

Base Game

Regular gameplay before bonus rounds activate. Dark Spiral's base game runs across 4,096–331,776 Ways on the 6×4 grid (expandable by Summoning blocks). Mid-High volatility (4/5) means most session profit comes from Summoning reveals and cascade chains — bonus rounds trigger about every 180 spins on average.

Bonus Buy (Feature Buy)

Skip the base game and jump straight into a bonus round. Dark Spiral offers Shattered Free Spins for 80x bet (RTP 96.18%) and Twisted Free Spins for 150x bet (RTP 96.25%). The third tier — Tortured — cannot be bought. It only triggers from 5 natural scatters (~1 in 35,000 spins). UK, Sweden, and Belgium block Bonus Buy by regulation.

Cascading Wins

Dark Spiral's primary chain mechanic. Win, winning symbols vanish, new ones drop in. Summoning blocks stay anchored across cascades — so every drop plays with the same expanded reel structure. About 40% of cascade chains end after 2 drops; 15% extend past 5 drops. The math model rewards patience: a single 1×4 Summoning on reel 3 can feed 12 cascade drops with successive winning combos.

Cluster Pays

Dark Spiral doesn't use cluster pays. Wins resolve through dynamic Ways-to-Win — 4,096 base ways expanding up to 331,776 when Summoning symbols add rows to reels. Cluster pays would require connected groups of matching symbols anywhere on the grid; Dark Spiral keeps the ways-format with anchored Summoning blocks providing the variable expansion.

Summoning Symbols

Dark Spiral's headline mechanic. Mystery stacked blocks land on reels 2 through 6. A 1×2 block reveals 3-6 matching symbols. A 1×3 cracks open 5-9. The big 1×4 unleashes 6-12 symbols pouring out, often adding extra rows to the reel and pushing ways to win from 4,096 toward 331,776. About 35% of Summoning reveals are premium symbols — the math doesn't punish you with low-pay junk.

Three Bonus Tiers

Dark Spiral's bonus selection isn't random — it's scatter-count dependent. 3 scatters trigger Shattered (more Summoning, but they don't stick). 4 scatters trigger Twisted (every Summoning symbol stays locked the entire round). 5 scatters trigger Tortured (guaranteed Summoning on spin one, sticky for all 12 spins, cascade multiplier starts at 2x). You can't buy Tortured.

Shattered Free Spins

Tier 1 of Dark Spiral's three-tier bonus system. 3 scatters trigger Shattered. Summoning symbols appear at boosted frequency but don't stay sticky between spins — they reveal once per spin and reset for the next. RTP 96.18%, average return ~45x. Bonus Buy 80x where available.

Twisted Free Spins

Tier 2 of Dark Spiral's bonus system. 4 scatters trigger Twisted. Every Summoning symbol that lands stays locked for the entire round, building a wall of expanded reels as the round progresses. Late-round Twisted spins can run with 6+ stacked Summoning blocks active simultaneously. RTP 96.25%, average return ~95x. Bonus Buy 150x where available.

Tortured Free Spins

Tier 3 of Dark Spiral's bonus system — the endgame. 5 natural scatters required (~1 in 35,000 spins). Cannot be bought. Guaranteed Summoning symbol on spin one, sticky for all 12 spins, and the cascade multiplier starts at 2x instead of 1x. RTP 96.30%, average return ~280x. This is where the 10,000x cap lives.

Sticky Summoning

The mechanic distinguishing Twisted and Tortured from Shattered. Sticky Summoning blocks stay anchored on their reels for the entire bonus round, accumulating across spins. Stack 4-5 sticky blocks and the back half of the round runs with massively expanded ways-to-win counts — easily past 100,000 active paylines on late-round spins.

Dead Spin

A spin that returns absolutely nothing. Dark Spiral's Mid-High volatility (4/5) produces dead spins about 75% of the time at base game with hit frequency ~25.20%. Dead spins still feed cascades — even non-winning Summoning reveals add rows to the grid that influence the next spin's ways count if the block stays.

Feature Trigger Rate

How often any bonus tier activates. Dark Spiral's scatter trigger rate sits at ~1 in 180 spins. Most triggers (~70%) hit Shattered (3 scatters). About 25% land on Twisted (4 scatters). Tortured at 5 scatters represents ~5% of natural triggers — roughly 1 in 35,000 base spins, the rarest natural feature in any Hacksaw Gaming title.

Free Spins

Bonus rounds where you don't pay the stake. Dark Spiral awards 10 free spins for Shattered or Twisted, 12 spins for Tortured. Retriggers add 5 more spins on a 3+ scatter landing during the round. The bonus tier is locked at trigger time — landing more scatters during a Shattered round doesn't upgrade you to Twisted.

Hit Frequency

How often Dark Spiral lands any winning combination. Approximately 25.20% — about 1 in 4 spins pays something. Lower than mainstream slots because the math model rewards cascade chains over frequent base-game hits. The cascade-chain hit rate (any chain extending past 2 drops) sits around 12% of all spins.

Max Win

The absolute maximum a slot can pay on a single round. Dark Spiral caps at 10,000x — modest by Hacksaw Gaming's range (Le Bandit caps at 20,000x, Dork Unit at 55,000x). The path to 10,000x runs almost exclusively through Tortured Free Spins: 5 natural scatters, sticky Summoning across 12 spins, cascade multiplier starting at 2x. Estimated probability: ~1 in 2,500,000.

Max Win Cap

Once Dark Spiral hits 10,000x, the round ends immediately. The cap protects Hacksaw Gaming's liability on rare Tortured-tier alignments where sticky Summoning blocks combine with extended cascade chains and the elevated 2x base multiplier.

Megaways

A Big Time Gaming licensed mechanic with up to 117,649 ways to win. Dark Spiral uses dynamic Ways-to-Win (4,096 base, up to 331,776) which is similar in spirit but isn't licensed Megaways — Hacksaw Gaming developed their own variable-row mechanic via Summoning blocks. The math behaves comparably to Megaways but with different reel-expansion logic.

Multiplier

A value that multiplies your win. Dark Spiral's base game runs without multipliers. Shattered and Twisted Free Spins use a cascade multiplier starting at 1x and climbing one step per cascade drop. Tortured starts that multiplier at 2x — meaning by cascade drop 5, Tortured is running 6x while equivalent Shattered/Twisted spins would be at 5x.

Paylines

Predefined lines across the reels where matching symbols form a win. Dark Spiral doesn't use traditional paylines — it uses 4,096–331,776 Ways variable Ways-to-Win. Adjacent matching symbols on consecutive reels (left-to-right) form winning ways regardless of row. Summoning blocks expand reel heights, multiplying available ways.

Paytable

The reference chart showing each symbol's payout for matching combinations. Access through the game's info menu. Dark Spiral's premium symbols (Oni Mask, Cursed Scroll, Spirit Lantern, Black Katana) pay the most. Mid-tier symbols include themed manga icons. Card royals (A/K/Q/J/10) fill out the bottom tier across the dynamic ways structure.

RNG (Random Number Generator)

The cryptographic algorithm determining every spin outcome. Hacksaw Gaming uses BMM Testlabs-certified RNGs — independently audited for fairness in regulated EU markets. Each spin in Dark Spiral is independent of the last; previous Summoning reveals or cascade chains have zero influence on future Summoning landing positions or symbol distributions.

RTP (Return to Player)

The theoretical percentage of wagered money a slot returns over millions of spins. Dark Spiral's top RTP is 96.22% (base game). Bonus variants: Shattered 96.18%, Twisted 96.25%, Tortured 96.30%. Operators can ship 94.22%, 92.32%, or 86.24% configurations — always verify the exact percentage in the game info screen before spinning.

Scatter

A special symbol that triggers features regardless of payline position. Dark Spiral's scatter is the Cursed Mask. 3 scatters = Shattered tier. 4 scatters = Twisted tier. 5 scatters = Tortured tier (the endgame). Scatters can land anywhere on the 6×4 grid. Scatter count at trigger determines the bonus tier — landing more scatters during the round doesn't upgrade.

Session Variance

The gap between actual results and theoretical RTP. Dark Spiral has 96.22% RTP, but a 200-spin session can return 25% to 350% of your wager. Without a feature trigger, sessions tend to run 60-85% of theoretical RTP. With one Twisted or Tortured trigger, a single session can finish at 200%+ of wagered amount.

Sticky Wild

A Wild symbol that stays in place across multiple spins. Dark Spiral's wilds are revealed within Summoning symbol drops — they're not natural reel symbols. During Twisted and Tortured, Summoning blocks stay sticky, and any wilds revealed inside those blocks remain on grid for the round duration. Shattered does not include sticky behavior.

Volatility (Variance)

How a slot's payouts are distributed. Dark Spiral is rated Mid-High (4/5) — meaningful drought-then-flood patterns with most action coming from cascade chains and bonus rounds. The 25.20% hit frequency produces longer dry spells than mainstream Hacksaw titles like Wanted Dead or a Wild but shorter than ultra-high-vol titles like Le Bandit.

Ways to Win

An alternative to fixed paylines. Dark Spiral uses 4,096 base ways on the 6×4 grid, expanding up to 4,096–331,776 Ways when Summoning symbols add rows to multiple reels. Adjacent matching symbols on consecutive reels (left-to-right) form winning ways regardless of row. The variable expansion is the reason Dark Spiral's win distribution skews so heavily toward bonus rounds.

Wild

A symbol that substitutes for any regular symbol to complete winning combinations. Dark Spiral's wilds emerge primarily from Summoning symbol reveals — about 12% of revealed symbols are wilds. They substitute for everything except the Cursed Mask scatter. Inside Twisted and Tortured, sticky-revealed wilds compound across cascade chains until the round ends.

Win Distribution

How total payouts are spread across different win sizes. Mid-High-volatility slots like Dark Spiral are top-heavy — Tortured Free Spins account for ~30% of total RTP contribution despite triggering rarely. Twisted contributes ~25%, Shattered ~20%, base-game cascades ~22%, base-line wins ~3%. The remaining percentage covers retriggers and ultra-rare alignments.

Bonus Buy Restrictions

Some countries ban purchasing bonus rounds. UK prohibits bonus buy since October 2021. Sweden caps bet sizes during buys. Belgium prohibits feature buys entirely. Dark Spiral's Bonus Buy options (80x Shattered, 150x Twisted) follow these regional restrictions. Tortured can never be bought regardless of jurisdiction — Hacksaw designed it as an exclusive natural-only tier.

Cursed Mask Scatter Trigger Tiers

Dark Spiral's defining feature distinction. Scatter count at landing determines which bonus tier you receive. 3 = Shattered (~70% of triggers). 4 = Twisted (~25%). 5 = Tortured (~5%). The 4-scatter probability is roughly 1 in 1,200 spins; the 5-scatter probability is roughly 1 in 35,000 spins. Most players will see Shattered hundreds of times before ever experiencing one Tortured trigger.

Hacksaw Gaming Horror Theme Series

Hacksaw Gaming's catalog includes several horror-themed titles. Dark Spiral (Japanese horror manga, March 2026) sits alongside Eyes of Atlantis, Wraith Hunter, and Killer Klowns. Common thread: heavy bonus-round skew, dynamic ways-to-win expansion, distinctive volatility ratings. Hacksaw's design philosophy emphasizes feature-driven RTP allocation over base-game frequency.

6×4 Grid (Expandable)

Dark Spiral's base grid format. 6 reels × 4 rows = 24 cells base. Summoning blocks expand individual reel heights — a 1×4 block on reel 3 can stretch that reel to 8 rows, dynamically adjusting ways-to-win count. The grid expansion is the math engine driving Dark Spiral's top-end potential. Sister titles in Hacksaw's catalog use 5×4 or 5×3 layouts; the 6×4 base is unique to Dark Spiral.

Cascade Multiplier (Base vs Tortured)

Dark Spiral's cascade math distinction. Base game and Shattered/Twisted bonuses start the cascade multiplier at 1x and climb +1 per cascade drop. Tortured starts at 2x — meaning by cascade drop 5, Tortured runs 6x while equivalent Shattered/Twisted spins are at 5x. The difference compounds dramatically on long cascade chains and is the reason Tortured's average return is 3x Twisted's.

Mobile Portrait Optimization

Dark Spiral's 6×4 grid was built for portrait-mode mobile play, not retrofitted from desktop. The reel layout, symbol sizes, and cascade animations all run at 60fps on iOS and Android. The Summoning block reveals have been tuned for thumb-tap interaction — some Hacksaw titles feel cramped on mobile, but Dark Spiral reads cleanly. Released March 2026 with mobile-first design as the priority.
